TOP 10 DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2018

Some things never go out of style: warm woods and cozy well-lit rooms, lingering over coffee with an old friend…But we live in a world where pop-up news alerts threaten our inner serenity multiple times daily. This year, the biggest trends in home are inspired by the need to feed our inner sanctum; bold colors, eco-awareness and the pure appreciation of a well-lived life. Conceptually defined by the Danish aesthetic hygge (pronounced hooga), here is a peak at the top 10 trends to be excited about in 2018.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE

eye-catching door design

Say good-bye to builder-grade doors and hello! to striking and bold. This year special attention is paid to the very first impression of every room in your home-the door. Both interior and exterior door designs pop with brilliant colors and graphic molding details and why not? A closed door is really just a big blank canvas, so show your personality (while you hide your stuff)!

TECH UP, CLEAN OUT & INVENTORY

The first step to appreciating what you have is to know what you have and thankfully, there’s an app for that! From structuring the family calendar to organizing your art collection, a new wave of apps long favored by businesses have begun to cross-pollinate to the residential market. Un-clutter your closets and storage units, inventory sports and seasonal equipment, and find them again with ease (some of my favs: Inventory, Picniic, Art Archive).

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

The indoor plant trend has even more growth potential in 2018 for good reason. Plants help purify indoor air and studies have linked them to increases in productivity, happiness and a general sense of wellbeing (hint: the clean movement isn’t just about food). One of our favorite makers at the NYNOW Home Show created the perfect hybrid of modern design in a solar-powered, hydroponic grow box for indoor herb gardens and more. The company, Modern Sprout, offers starter seed kits, winter bulbs and amazing gifts—check out modsprout.com.

TILES MAKE A SPLASH

Having thoroughly dominated kitchens and baths, the plain white subway tile will always appeal to classic sensibility, however, this year it’s refreshing to finally see some exciting patterns, textures and pops of color hit the market.

CEILINGS UP THEIR GAME

This years biggest trend in room design (according to Pinterest searches, up 310%) is the statement ceiling. Geometric patterns, clever paint textures, layered wood blocks and wallpaper are dressing up this year’s rooms with style and personality from the top down.

THE HAPPY CAMPER

In the spirit of simplicity, there is huge trend toward RV renovation this year. Whether for weekend get-aways, deluxe cross-country journeys or dooms-day preparedness, according to Pinterest trends, searches for campers are up 900%!

NO PLAY FOR STAINLESS GREY

It took over 40 years for us to cleanse our palettes of ‘the avocado incident’, when appliances dared to be colorful, but according to what we saw at KBIS (Kitchen/Bath Industry Show) these ain’t your mama’s kitchen appliances. With integrated panels and chromed out trim (made to look like drawers), vintage stylings and options galore. The hottest trend in kitchen appliances allows homeowners all the things: blend appliances away with cabinetry or choose to set them off like crowned jewels- brilliant!

TWO-TONED CABINETRY

Much like the modular bikini craze, (where we can finally wear mismatched bathing suits in public without shame) the cabinetry trend for the perpetually indecisive is here! Honestly, I am a big fan of this design trend for large kitchens especially. The look creates an illusion of depth and height, typically lighter colored wall cabinets pair well with darker lowers and islands.

GRANITE SALES SINK LIKE STONE

It’s official: America’s love affair with granite is over! Top off your two-tone cabinetry and boldly tiled backsplash with the hottest trends ( and hardest minerals on earth): Quartz! This material can be customized in just about any color and, unlike marble, granite or other stones, quartz countertops are engineered not mined, making them a much more environmentally friendly option. Bask in the glory of your good decision and let the compliments roll in…

GIVE IT UP, GET IT OUT, GIVE IT AWAY

Serenity is the sister of simplicity and nothing disrupts your inner sanctum quite like bumbling into the same tired objects you no longer use or find joy in. Fortunately, it’s never been simpler to ease your mind and clear your space with sites like Chairish, Poshmark, Letgo and others, where you can sell your excess stuff for profit. Not interested in the online sales hassle? no problem! For a reasonable rate, local haul away services like College Hunks or Junkluggers are happy to exchange your unwanted items for a tax deductible donation receipt and give you and your stuff a chance at a second life.

Savvy, stylish eco-conscious consumers work all day and want to come home to a well-designed home they can feel good about living in, proving you don’t have to have it all to feel like you do.
